Heliotrope Fabric Collection ︎︎︎

I designed this collection of printed textiles to accompany my 2022 painting exhibition ‘Heliotrope’, and using the same bold and evocative colour palette of purples, reds, yellows and blues that ran through the paintings.

The Heliotrope series of paintings reference the patterns of written language and the motifs used in these fabric designs come from the same source. Elements are taken directly from the paintings and from ink drawings I made using Chinese calligraphy brushes. Gestural marks resembling the loops, waves and crosshatches of cursive handwriting are copied and repeated many times over, forming linear patterns held within a loose structure of horizontal lines, like a page of writing. These are further combined with digitally generated geometric helix motifs, which appear to shift and rotate, as the purple Heliotrope flower twists to follow the path of the sun.
