Heliotrope Paintings ︎︎︎
This series of paintings, made for a solo exhibition titled ‘Heliotrope’, deals with abstraction within the patterns of written language. The starting point was abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky’s 1912 artists book of surrealist poetry and woodcut prints entitled Sounds. This book is a synthesis of writing and visual art which highlights the connection between abstraction in language and abstraction in painting. I connected particularly with Kandinsky’s use of language relating to colour, and titles for the works were drawn directly from the poems; these serving as descriptive guides for me while working. In responding visually to Kandinsky’s poetry I wanted to address the way in which one medium of art can translate into another, and create evocative, abstract descriptions with colour, shape and pattern.
